The Super Mario Bros. Movie Is the Biggest Film in 2023 So Far

Ticket sales for The Super Mario Bros. Movie dropped 41% since its opening weekend, but that doesn’t mean it’s doing poorly. It was the number one movie in the box office for the second weekend in a row, bringing in another $87 million and crushing out the rest of the competition. According to Variety, it’s now made a total of about $347.8 million just in the North American market. Looking at the worldwide market, it’s made about $678 million. And it still has yet to open in Japan, its homeland.

And although it’s only been out two weekends, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has made more money than any other film in 2023 so far. It’s beaten Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which has netted $474 million. For some other impressive numbers, it’s beaten the video game movies Warcraft (which made about $439 million) and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (which made about $449 million) combined. In fact, there are more and more predictions that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is going to make more than a billion dollars.

Looking at the rest of the American box office for this weekend, second place went to The Pope’s Exorcist, third place went to John Wick: Chapter 4, fourth place went to Renfield. The anime movie Suzume came in seventh place and netted $5 million.

Illumination gave this description for The Super Mario Bros. Movie:

“From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.”
