THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Scores 7th Place on All-Time Worldwide Anime Film Chart

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

Since THE FIRST SLAM DUNK opened in China last week, the anime film has rocketed up the worldwide anime film chart. The film entered tenth place during the weekend and settled into seventh place as the weekend turned into the week, pushing Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo down into eighth place.

This is thanks to an extra US$9 million made in China for a total of US$59.08 million in less than a week, as well as Japan’s gross increasing to 13.27 billion yen (US$100.30 million) with 9.22 million tickets sold, where the film sits as the 11th highest-grossing anime film of all-time in the country. South Korea has risen to US35.44 million while the rest of South East Asia has netted THE FIRST SLAM DUNK US$30.35 million.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK is currently sitting at US$225.17 million from ten territories in Asia.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK opened in Japan on December 3 in regular and IMAX theaters and expanded to Dolby Cinema screens on December 10. The film will be headed to the UK, Ireland and Malta from Anime Limited and Toei Animation Europe this Summer, who describes the film:

Ryota Miyagi and basketball have always been one thing. His love for this sport was transmitted to him by his older brother Sota, who died in an accident at sea when Ryota was still very young. He is the point guard of Shohoku, a team from the Kanagawa prefecture which gained a spot at Inter-High despite being unknown. Ryota is ready, together with his teammates, to face the “unbeatable” Sannoh, the champion team of the local tournament.
