SPY x FAMILY Anime Is Breaking Records for TV Tokyo
It doesn’t take undercover work to know that the anime SPY x FAMILY, based on the fan favorite manga by Tatsuya Endo, is doing very well. But how well is it doing? According to journalist Tadashi Sudo, who spoke with the president of TV Tokyo, the second cour of SPY x FAMILY is “best among all programs on all stations for the July 2022 season.” The July 2022 season lasts from July into October, and the latest SPY x FAMILY episodes made their debut on October 1.
In Japan, SPY x FAMILY comes on the TV at 11:26 on Saturdays. The audience average rating for watching it on TV is 1.8%. Quite a few people tape it to watch at a later time. Then the average audience average rating is 5.8%.
Looking at the first episode of the second cour, it received an audience viewership of 3.6%. For people who recorded it to watch later, it again jumped, this time with an audience rating of 6%. That broke records for TV Tokyo.
Sudo thought these numbers could be a sign that playing the anime so close to midnight is not people’s preferences. But even with this possibly bad timing, SPY x FAMILY is beating all the competition.
VIZ Media is publishing the manga, and Crunchyroll and Hulu are streaming the anime, both subbed and dubbed. Crunchyroll gave this description of its plot:
“World peace is at stake and secret agent Twilight must undergo his most difficult mission yet—pretend to be a family man. Posing as a loving husband and father, he’ll infiltrate an elite school to get close to a high-profile politician. He has the perfect cover, except his wife’s a deadly assassin and neither knows each other’s identity. But someone does, his adopted daughter who’s a telepath!”
