Spring Anime Openings We Can’t Stop Listening To
A new anime season means new anime openings! Long-time fans know that the music is a huge part of the allure of a new series. Whether it’s a favorite band taking an anime turn or an anime-centric performer bringing their talent to a new show, we always keep an ear out. And this season already has some certified bops.
As the spring season kicks off, we’re picking a few of our early faves to add to the playlist. Check them out below, and be sure to let us know which tunes you’ve got on repeat!
“Work”—Hell’s Paradise
Good anime openings give us a sense of what we’re in for… and Hell’s Paradise does that in spades. Set to “Work” by Ringo Sheena and Millennium Parade, this sequence is alternately brutal and beautiful. Just like the places we’ll go in this adaptation of Yuji Kaku’s dark fantasy thriller.
Deadly ninja and certified wife guy Gabimaru the Hollow is due to be executed. Under the watchful eye of executioner Sagiri, he travels to a far-off island that allegedly possesses the Elixir of Life. If he brings it back, he gets a full pardon. But the island in question is… well, let’s just say while it’s beautiful, it’s also deadly. This epic song is a perfect intro to each week’s horrors.
“Kien Romance”—Otaku Elf
If you prefer lighter anime openings, “Kien Romance” by Nanawo Akari will fit the bill. The Otaku Elf opening is a cheerful bop, combining modern beats with traditional instruments. Set to laid-back moments from the protagonists’ lives, it’s a must-see, and a must-hear.
The “otaku elf” of the title is Elda, who resides at the Takamimi Shrine. She loves video games and keeping to herself. Watching over her is teenage shrine maiden Koito, making sure Elda has everything she needs to live her best centuries-long life.
“Gyakuten Geki”—I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World
Good anime openings get you pumped up for what’s to come. And the long-titled I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too delivers. The song comes to us from rock band Tsukuyomi, headed up by VOCALOID producer YurryCanon. The group also performed the ending theme for last year’s Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story. But this offering is much more intense.
The series follows high schooler Yuya, who is bullied for his appearance and personality. After inheriting his late grandfather’s house, Yuya discovers a portal to a fantasy world. Going back and forth between the two worlds, he finds ways to change himself and his life, literally overnight. This makes him new friends… and new enemies.
