Japan Box Office: Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume Repeats at No.1 with 1.147 Billion Yen

Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume earned 1.147 billion yen (8.08 million USD) on 829,000 admissions in its second weekend, which was 17 percent down from its opening weekend but was enough to take the top spot for two consecutive weeks.

The 121-minute film’s cumulative total domestic gross has reached 4.154 billion yen (29.29 million USD) on 2.99 million admissions, which is 107 percent of the first two-week gross of Shinkai’s 2016 film Your Name., and 104 percent of that of his 2019 film Weathering With You. If the momentum continues, there may be a possibility that Suzume becomes the most commercially successful film of his career.

Crunchyroll is teaming up with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International to bring Suzume to global audiences outside of Asia in early 2023.
