Ya Boy Kongming! Manga Gets Live-Action Drama Adaptation This Fall

Following the well-received TV anime adaptation in the spring of 2022, a live-action TV drama adaptation of Yuto Yotsuba (story) and Ryo Ogawa’s (art) comedy manga Ya Boy Kongming! is set to premiere on Fuji TV in the fall of 2023.

The manga was first serialized in Kodansha’s Comic Days website from December 2019 to November 2021, than has been running in the same publisher’s Weekly Young Magazine. So far 13 tankobon volumes have been available in Japan. The story centers on Zhuge Kongming, the legendary Chinese strategist who is reincarnated in Shibuya of the modern Japan in a young body. He brings ingenious innovation to the Japanese music scene in order to fulfill the dream of Eiko Tsukimi, a fledgling singer he met there.

41-year-old Japanese actor Osamu Mukai is cast as Zhuge Kongming. “It may be hard to imagine from the fact that it is a reincarnation story and the catchy title ‘Paripi Koumei,’ but what is depicted in the original manga and script is a story with a very strong core,” he said. “The growth of a diva into a professional artist is linked to the growth of Kongming’s master in the midst of battles of the Three Kingdoms period. I also believe that by listening to music through the drama, viewers will be able to feel the power of music once again. I hope that the viewers will enjoy the music itself.”

The drama’s official website and Twitter account have posted the first look of Mukai in his Kongming costume.
