The first season of its live-action TV drama adaptation aired for 12 episodes in Japan from April to June 2019 and gained a huge following. The two leading cast members of the gay couple, Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car) as Shiro Kakei and Seiyou Uchino (Van Hohenheim / Father in Fullmetal Alchemist live-action films) as Kenji Yabuki, are confirmed to reprise their roles.

Season 2 will focus on the couple’s daily life, who will be in their fifties. Nishijima said, “With Uchino-san, and the regular and guest members, I hope to carefully depict how the people in this story experience what we have experienced in the real world, and how they grow old and change little by little, just like us. The members are working hard and earnestly, just as we have in the past, so please look forward to it.” Uchino added, “I believe that Shiro-san and Kenji in ‘Nanitabe’ will be entering a new phase of their lives. It would be wonderful if we could feel the vague and gentle world with all of you.”
