Precure Franchise Gets First Stage Play Featuring High School Boys

Toei Animation announced today that its long-running Precure franchise’s first stage play, entitled Dancing☆Star Precure The Stage, will open in Tokyo and Osaka in the fall of 2023. The franchise has offered character musical shows featuring kigurumi (suit) actors since its launch in 2004, but this is the first stage play performed by non-kigurumi actors.

The main characters of the stage play are high school boys who transform into Precure. The ongoing latest 20th TV anime series Soaring Sky! Precure has the franchise’s first regular male Precure character, Cure Wing, so this might be another inevitable flow in history. The press release writes, “The original story depicts their daily life devoted to dancing and their mission as Precure. The stage will deliver the exciting world of new Precure, with direction that is unique for a stage play, powerful dance and action that will unfold before the audience’s eyes!”

Yo Hosaka, the leader of the theater unit Kusou Kumikyoku and who has worked on numerous 2.5-dimensional stage plays, such as Ace Attorney and Lycoris Recoil, serves as director on his own script. In addition, Takashi Washio, one of the producers of the early Precure series, will join as supervisor. And Toshie Kawamura, the character designer of Yes! Precure 5, Smile Precure! and Hugtto! Precure, drew the key visual illustration below.
