Oshi no Ko Manga Doubles Print Number Since the Anime Began

Oshi no Ko

It’s been no secret that Oshi no Ko is widespread, with signage everywhere you go in Japan and Aka Akasaka’s story captivating audiences, it was only a matter of time until the manga print numbers caught up with demand and boy have they!

The official Twitter account for the manga revealed on June 15 that over 9 million copies of the Oshi no Ko manga have been printed (physically) and sold (digitally) in Japan as of May 31. Mantan Web has reported that this is double the amount since the anime began in April, which had the series pegged to 4.5 million copies in print. Even if the manga took over all the printing presses allocated to other series, a majority of the sales would have to be digital versions of the series.

This has been a very well-established path of manga over the last couple of years. A popular anime has been released and people have decided instead of watching week by week, buying the entire manga series to catch up.

The Oshi no Ko anime is currently airing weekly with HiDIVE streaming it in English-speaking countries. The manga, written by Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish), is published in Weekly Young Jump in Japan while Manga Plus digitally publishes the manga’s official English version. Manga Plus describes the series as such:

“In the world of showbiz, lies are weapons.” Goro works as an OB-GYN in the countryside, a life far removed from the entertainment industry. Meanwhile, his favorite idol, Ai Hoshino, has begun her climb to stardom. The two meet in the “worst possible way,” setting the gears of fate in motion! The amazing Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari team up to depict the world of showbiz from a completely new perspective in this shocking series!
