Live adaptations of anime properties usually are a very physical affair — like the non-stop running and stunts on display in My Hero Academia The “Ultra Stage” — but it may soon reach an unprecedented level after today’s announcement of a stage play based on men’s gymnastics anime Backflip!!.

Directed and scripted by Yu Murai (SK8 The Infinity: The Stage Part 2), Backflip!!: The Stage is set to run from October 22 to October 29 at Tokyo’s Nissho Hall. Casting details will be announced in mid-July.

Helmed by director Toshimasa Kuroyanagi (The Great Passage) at studio ZEXCS, original anime Backflip!! ran for twelve episodes from April 2021 and was followed by a sequel film in July 2022. Both are currently streaming on Crunchyroll, which describes the series as such:

The final summer of middle school, Shotaro Futaba discovers boys gymnastics and is completely enamored by it. Shotaro ends up going to Soshukan Private High School (aka Ao High) and decides to visit the boys gymnastics club. He’s greeted by very unique senpais and a star gymnast named Misato Ryoya. Dedicating your life to something you love during your fiery days of youth… Of course, there is frustration, and fights, but see how these boys work together as a team towards a similar goal in this drama about sports and youth.
