Makoto Shinkai’s The Garden of Words Anime Film Gets Global Stage Play Adaptation
On this day in 2013 — before he would go on to create Your Name., Weathering With You and Suzume — Makoto Shinkai unveiled The Garden of Words, a short anime film that left a significant mark on viewers’ hearts and his directorial career. But today isn’t just a notable anniversary for this seminal work: it’s also a big announcement day, as the award-winning drama is officially heading to the stage in both Japan and the United Kingdom!
Whole Hog Theatre’s Alexandra Rutter, whose body of work includes the first stage adaptation of Princess Mononoke, is leading the Anglo-Japanese production on both sides. Performances will run in London across August and September later this year with a local cast, followed by performances in Tokyo starting in November.
