Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume Ends Its Japanese Theatrical Run on May 27

 

After opening back in November 2022, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume is ending its theatrical run in Japan on May 27. Alongside the reveal of the date of the final main theatrical run for the flick, an update to its box office total was revealed as well as confirmation that Suzume will most probably stay as the 14th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan.

 

As of April 27, Suzume has grossed 14.52 billion yen (US$107.95 million) at the Japanese box office with 10.95 million tickets sold. This makes it the 8th highest-grossing anime film in Japan of all time, just above Weathering With You at 9th place and below Ponyo at 7th place.

 

This has also brought Suzume’s worldwide total up to US$299.38 million, just a few hundred thousand dollars short of US$300 million. It will get there and mark the fourth anime film to ever do so later this week thanks to its extended run in China. Worldwide, Suzume sits behind Your Name. as the 4th highest-grossing anime film of all time.

 

From May 12, a special “The Final Screening” version of Suzume will be shown in theaters in Japan with all 273 cuts retaken for Blu-ray Disc and DVD release shown on the big screen along with a message from director Makoto Shinkai.

Suzume is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also penned the screenplay for the film alongside Masayoshi Tanaka as the character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as the animation director and Takumi Tanji as the art director with animation production at CoMix Wave Films. 

 

Suzume was released in Japan on November 11. Crunchyroll teamed up with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International to bring the feature to global audiences outside of Asia starting April 12, 2023.

 

Synopsis:

“Suzume no Tojimari” is a coming-of-age story for the 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where she must close the doors causing devastation. 

 

Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob… Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky…

 

Never-before-seen scenery, encounters and farewells… A myriad of challenges await her on her journey.
