Live-Action Streets of Rage Film Rights Acquired by Lionsgate

Streets of Rage

If there’s a film that absolutely should have been made the second the first game dropped in 1991, it’s Streets of Rage. Better late than never, though, as John Wick creator and writer Derek Kolstad was previously announced as the live-action adaptation’s screenwriter. Now, thanks to an exclusive report on Deadline, we know that Lionsgate has acquired the rights to the Streets of Rage film project.

Kolstad is also producing alongside Toru Nakahara of SEGA; Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson and Dan Jevons of dj2 Entertainment; and Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Tony Shaw of Escape Artists.

The original entry in SEGA’s Streets of Rage beat ’em up series launched on the Genesis/Mega Drive console in 1991 and spawned two sequels on the system. Streets of Rage 4 followed after a long gap in 2020, featuring new devs but a classic soundtrack from series composer Yuzo Koshiro. We still don’t know of Koshiro will be on the film’s soundtrack, but we can dream.
