Japan’s 2022 Manga Sales Reaches The Highest in History Again
According to the latest report by The National Publishing Association and Publishing Science Institute, the annual sales of Japan’s domestic manga market in 2022, which combined print and digital publishing, reached 677 billion yen (about 5.264 billion USD).

Compared to 2021, when it increased by 10.3 percent to 675.9 billion yen, this was a slight increase of 0.2 percent from the previous year, but it was still the fourth consecutive year of growth and the largest ever recorded. The proportion of manga in the overall Japanese publishing market was 41.45 percent, which was 1.1 percent up from 2021.
With the total sales of 229.1 billion yen (about 1.781 billion USD), the print manga market decreased by 13.4 percent from the previous year. Manga tankobon sales in 2022 reached 175.4 billion yen (about 1.363 billion USD), a decrease of 16 percent. And manga magazine sales was 53.7 billion yen (about 418 million USD), a decrease of 3.8 percent.
The share of digital sales in the overall manga market was 66.2 percent. Total digital sales increased by 8.9 percent from the previous year to 447.9 billion yen (about 3.482 billion USD), which was slower than in 2021, when the increase was 18.6 percent.
