Japan Box Office Top 10: Doraemon’s 42nd Film Stays on No.1 for 3 Consecutive Weekends

 

Thanks to a lack of strong competitors, Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia, the 42nd anime feature film in the nationally popular Doraemon franchise, has stayed No.1 for three consecutive weekends after returning to the top spot.

 

In its sixth weekend, the 107-minute film earned 204 million yen (1.586 million USD) on 166,000 admissions, bringing its cumulative total to 3.8 billion yen (29.55 million USD) on 2.24 million admissions. It has now become the eighth top-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing the 32nd film Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles—Animal Adventure‘s 3.62 billion yen in 2012.

 

With 140 million yen (1.09 million USD) on 101,000 admissions, the live-action film adaptation of Akumi Agitogi’s fantasy light novel My Happy Marriage remained in second place, the same as last weekend. In the three weeks since its release, the film’s cumulative total box office gross has surpassed 2.1 billion yen (16.33 million USD) on 1.61 million admissions.

 

Both Shin Kamen Rider and THE FIRST SLAM DUNK have moved up one place since last weekend. The former ranked No.4 in its fourth weekend, while the latter ranked No.5 in its 19th weekend. After making its No.4 place debut last weekend, Touken Ranbu The Movie – Reimei (Dawn) –, the second live-action film adaptation of Nitroplus and DMM Games’ video game franchise Touken Ranbu, dropped to No.7.

 

Following the first two chapters in 2021, the much-awaited third chapter of the Princess Principal Crown Handler film series was finally released in 93 theaters in Japan on April 7. Due to its small number of theaters, it didn’t appear in the overall weekend box office ranking Top 10, but ranked No.3 in Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.03/5.0 based on 79 reviews.
