Japan Box Office: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Makes 2nd Place Debut

The CG animation superhero film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, opened in 354 theaters in Japan on June 16, two weeks after its US release, earning 396 million yen (2.8 million USD) on 249,000 admissions in its first three days and making its second place debut in the weekend box office ranking. The first-weekend gross was a huge 182 percent of that of the first film, which made 900 million yen (6.35 million USD) from its total theatrical run in Japan.

The 140-minute film has also been well-received by Japanese audience, ranking No.1 in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.4/5.0 based on 6,640 reviews.

While disappearing from the top 10 in its fourth weekend, the cumulative total box office gross of the live-action feature film adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s Rohan at the Louvre (Rohan au Louvre) manga has finally surpassed one billion yen (7.03 million USD) on 720,000 admissions in 24 days since its release.

Rohan at the Louvre is one of the episodes in Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, a spin-off to Araki’s long-running JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, with the protagonist Rohan Kishibe is one of the main characters in JoJo’s fourth installment, Diamond is Unbreakable. Its live-action TV drama series starring Issey Takahashi as Rohan aired for eight episodes on NHK General TV between 2020 and 2022. This is the first time that a film version of a live-action drama series broadcast on NHK has grossed over one billion yen at the Japanese box office.

As previously reported, the cumulative total box office of the male idol-themed multimedia franchise IDOLiSH7‘s first concert film IDOLiSH 7 LIVE 4bit BEYOND THE PERiOD has also reached a milestone of one billion yen (7.03 million USD) in five weeks since its release. The 93-minute film was released in Japan on May 20 and still ranked ninth, the same position from the previous weekend, in its fifth weekend.
