Japan Box Office: IDOLiSH7’s 1st Concert Film Ranks 5th in Opening Weekend

IDOLiSH 7 LIVE 4bit BEYOND THE PERiOD — the first concert film from the male idol-themed multimedia franchise IDOLiSH7 — was released in 173 theaters across Japan on May 20. Yet despite the small number of theaters compared to other wide-release films (which usually have more than 350), the 93-minute film earned 227 million yen (1.64 million USD) on 114,230 admissions from its first weekend, ranking fifth in its opening weekend. The film also ranked second — the highest among Japanese films — on Filmraks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.18/5.0 based on 53 reviews.

The IDOLiSH7 franchise released its first rhythm game developed by Bandai Namco Online for Android and iOS platforms in August 2015. The series has continued to develop several multimedia projects, including the TV anime series which aired for three seasons between 2018 and 2023.

In recent years, feature films by idol-themed multimedia franchises that depict only stage performances rather than stories have continued to make box office success in Japan. The Uta no Prince-sama franchise released Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love Kingdom in 2019 (1.82 billion yen) and Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love ST☆RISH Tours in 2022 (2 billion yen), while the BanG Dream! franchise had BanG Dream! FILM LIVE in 2019 (300 million yen) and BanG Dream! Film Live 2nd Stage in 2021 (100 million yen).

IDOLiSH 7 LIVE 4bit BEYOND THE PERiOD is a concert film depicting the stage performances of the franchise’s four idol groups: IDOLiSH7, TRIGGER, Re:vale, and ZOOL. The film features two distinct versions — “DAY1” and “DAY2” — with different song lists, screened on consecutive days during its theatrical run.

The Detective Conan anime franchise’s 26th feature film, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, ranked third in its sixth weekend, one position down from the previous weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 11.7 billion yen (84.5 million USD) on 8.27 million admissions.

In its fifth weekend, Tokyo Revengers 2 Chi no Valentine-hen -Unmei- (“Bloody Halloween Arc -Fate-“) ranked seventh, bringing its total to 2.23 billion yen (16 million USD) on 1.67 million admissions in 31 days since its release on April 21. After making its fourth-place debut last weekend, PSYCHO-PASS PROVIDENCE, the latest feature film from Production I.G’s PSYCHO-PASS anime franchise, dropped to 10th in its second weekend.

After staying in the Japanese box office top 10 for 24 consecutive weekends since its release on December 3, 2022, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK finally disappeared from the top 10 listing. The film earned 14.2 billion yen (102.4 million USD) in Japan in 170 days.
