Haken Anime! Live-action Film Wins Nikkan Sports Film Award’s Best Film of 2022

 

 

Nikkan Sports announced the winners of its 35th Nikkan Sports Film Award on December 27, including the live-action film adaptation of the Naoki Prize-winning author Mizuki Tsujimura’s Haken Anime! novel, which won the “Best Film” award.

The story centers on Hitomi Saito, a former local government employee who has jumped into the world of the anime industry. She makes her directorial debut and competes for the title of “Haken” (supremacy) with the star director of her dreams, Chiharu Ouji. He has produced many mega-hit films and is returning to the director’s chair for the first time in eight years. Hitomi struggles to win the title “Haken” together with the peculiar producer and her unique colleagues.

 

The 128-minute live-action film was directed by Kohei Yoshino, who participated as a CG creator in Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 anime feature film Your Name. and has worked on numerous commercials and music video. Toei Animation supervised the project, which included footage of two in-story anime films – “Soundback – Kanade no Ishi-“ directed by Hitomi and “Unmei Sensen Liddell-Light” by Chiharu.

 

It was released in Japan on May 20, 2022, then earned 180 million yen (1.35 million USD) from its total domestic run. From the film, Tasuku Emoto, who played Toukei Animation’s chief producer, Osamu Yukihito, also gets the “Best Supporting Actor” award.
