Both the Kitaro Tanjou – GeGeGe no Nazo theatrical anime film and the Akuma-kun anime series are parts of a larger, four-part project celebrating the 100th anniversary of manga author Shigeru Mizuki’s birth. The other two parts include a yokai-themed art exhibition devoted to Mizuki’s life and career and a campaign celebrating the charms of all 6 TV anime adaptations of GeGeGe no Kitaro produced by Toei Animation. Crunchyroll currently streams this most recent adaptation of GeGeGe no Kitaro, and describes the story of the series as follows:

Nearly twenty years into the 21st century, people have forgotten the existence of Yokai. When a number of unexplainable phenomena plague adults of the human world with confusion and chaos, thirteen-year-old Mana writes a letter to the Yokai Post in search of answers, only to be greeted by Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro…

Kitaro Tanjou – GeGeGe no Nazo is scheduled to be released in Japanese theaters in fall 2023 while the Akuma-kun TV anime series will premiere on Netflix at some point in the year.
