FEATURE: 5 Things You Need to Know Before TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

After a long wait, Nasa and Tsukasa Yuzaki’s adventures as newlyweds are back in TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2. The rom-com that begins where others end will continue to adapt Kenjiro Hata’s original manga under director Hiroshi Ikehata at the animation studio Seven Arcs, but first we need to take a look back at the things we all need to know before reuniting with the couple.

The last time we saw them was in the OVA “Uniform,” a sweet appetizer of things to come in Season 2 that premiered in November 2022. Now we’re back with Nasa and Tsukasa where we left off, at the Arisugawa bath house’s guest room so let’s jump right into it!

This story begins where others end.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

If you are a fan of TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You, this is something you already know but it is worth remembering. Normally, anime rom-coms follow the sometimes overly long process of becoming a couple but this anime takes the opposite route. It didn’t take Nasa and Tsukasa a season to get together, by the end of Chapter 1 they are married and already living together.  Certainly two years went by since their first meeting, but for us as viewers, it only took a few minutes.

This anime explores their adorable life as a couple and the fun of the series centers around seeing the small strides they take in their relationship, from buying furniture for their tiny apartment, going shopping together, or going on a trip to visit Nasa’s parents. Season 2 will give us more of their blissful married life while getting to know each other more and more.

To call it love at first sight is an understatement.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

Love at first sight stories are commonplace in rom-coms, but in TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2 they take it a step further. Nasa not only falls in love with Tsukasa at first sight, he almost loses his life for a chance to speak to her and agrees to a marriage in the blink of an eye. The most curious thing is that she also fell in love with him pretty much instantly, not long after saving his life. Tsukasa is even the one who proposes that they marry.

Two years later, it is she who knocks on Nasa’s door and presents him with the marriage registration papers, which he promptly signs, beginning their relationship. This anime pushes the concept of love at first sight to its absolute limit and we’re more than happy to follow the journey of this unconventional couple of teenagers discovering what it means to be married.

For someone so smart, Nasa is very naive.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

Nasa is a true genius, and no, this is not hyperbole. Initially motivated by the embarrassment his own name represents to him, Nasa wants to reach the speed of light before a certain aerospace agency he shares a name with. He works hard to better himself. Although his life takes a huge detour when he meets Tsukasa, at 18, the young man has proven to be capable of programming faster than AI, repairing any machine in record time and saving businesses from bankruptcy.

Despite all his knowledge, our protagonist lacks common sense in many aspects of daily life. Nasa needs a healthy dose of everyday knowledge. His cooking skills are non-existent, he doesn’t seem to care about the taste of food. He is the type of person who mixes colored and white clothes in the washing machine. When it comes to doing things for Tsukasa he completely loses his mind, to the point of almost spending all of his savings on a diamond ring… luckily she stops him.

Tsukasa is a mystery… and a real geek.

Obviously, I do not want to spoil anything for the “anime-only” crowd,  but even with what little we discover about her in Season 1, it’s obvious there is something strange going on with Tsukasa. When she saves Nasa, despite also being run over, she manages to walk away without a problem and appears fully healed before Nasa loses consciousness. At one point, she says that she never gets sick. Why is she so tough?

On the other hand, while Tsukasa has all the skills of an ideal housewife, starting with her Michelin level cooking, she’s also a NEET level geek. She loves movies, anime, manga, and especially video games. Her competitive side is made evident once a console is powered up (as demonstrated at the Arisugawa family’s takoyaki party in Season 1) and whenever she drops random anime quotes at the drop of a hat.

All the other characters are endearing… and a bit cuckoo.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

Although Tonikawa focuses almost exclusively on Nasa and Tsukasa, the cast around them bring their own wackiness to the show. Kaname Arisugawa can have some problematic habits, but she supports the relationship and often gives Nasa advice. Her older sister, Aya Arisugawa, is an air-headed gamer and streamer who doesn’t respect the personal space of others much, although to her credit, it must be said that she accepted her defeat for Nasa’s affection with grace.

This is something that cannot be said for Chitose Kaginoji, Tsukasa’s younger “sister” who is fervently opposed to the couple’s love, even though deep down she knows they are meant for each other. She’s always accompanied by the maids Charlotte and Aurora, one of them too uninhibited for her own good and the other dangerously skilled with Photoshop. This season we will meet more characters like Ginga, Nasa’s cousin, and Ouka, his mechanic-loving school friend, all with their own weird quirks.

All in all TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You is a show packed with charming characters and a seemingly simple slice-of-life story about love and the fun of living as a couple. For those who already saw the first season is a welcomed return, and if you’re not a convert I hope this helps you get started with it.
