Elden Ring Game Sells Over 20 Million Copies

Bandai Namco’s latest investor report for the end of fiscal year 2022 has been released, and the extensive document is typically used to measure where the publisher and developer’s collection of properties are performing in terms of sales and revenue.

The section on video game sales numbers also had its own surprises, with FromSoftware’s Elden Ring selling slightly over 20 million copies since its release at the beginning of 2022, making it one of the most popular games in the developer’s history at 20.5 million copies sold to date.

The game proved popular at first due to the existing fanbase cultivated over the years from the Soulsborne series of games—from Demon’s Souls to the Dark Souls series and PlayStation hit Bloodborne—but Bandai Namco’s expanded marketing and publishing campaign for the game saw it reach heights of visibility and recognition that no FromSoftware game had enjoyed previously, even during the Armored Core era.

Bandai Namco’s financial results finished out strongly for fiscal year 2022 thanks to Elden Ring‘s popularity, reaching $7.3 billion in sales for the previous fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. This compares quite favorably to fiscal year 2022, which reached a total of $6.6 billion in sales revenue, representing an 11 percent increase in revenue year-over-year.

As a result, Bandai Namco are increasingly positive for the new fiscal year, forecasting a slight sales increase to $7.4 billion for fiscal year 2024. Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon will be a focus with its release coming in August while another Naruto game is in the pipeline, and the long-awaited Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is also expected to be released during the fiscal year, adding to the rosy projections.
