Doga Kobo, the studio behind many fan-favorite hits like Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun and NEW GAME!, plus the upcoming Oshi no Ko adaptation, are trying their hand at an original drama anime titled Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai (Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night), and it’s already looking like a treat in a teaser visual and trailer that were unveiled with today’s announcement.

The series is currently slated to begin airing in 2024.

With an original story by JELEE and character drafts by popman3580, Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night is being directed by Ryohei Takeshita (Eromanga Sensei) at studio Doga Kobo, with scripts by Yuki Yaku (Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki author) and character designs adapted for animation by Junichiro Taniguchi (SING “YESTERDAY” FOR ME).

The anime’s official website describes the series as such:

“I want to find what I enjoy.”

Shibuya, a district overflowing with identity.

A girl trying to find herself drifts through Shibuya in the dead of night until a special encounter changes everything.

Produced by Doga Kobo on the studio’s 50th anniversary, this is coming-of-age ensemble drama directed by Eromanga Sensei‘s Ryohei Takeshita and penned by Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki author Yuji Yaku.

For the first time, the creative activities of unknown young girls will begin——

Yaku’s comments with the announcement mention the toll of social media, how it creates unhealthy and sometimes unattainable value, and how girls, like the ones depicted in the anime, are conflicted by who they want to be and what those around them want them to do.
