Sugino entered the entertainment industry in 2015 after winning the Grand Prize at the 12th FINEBOYS exclusive model audition. While working as a fashion model, he has also appeared in numerous TV dramas and films, most recently in the highly acclaimed role of Naoto Tachibana in the Tokyo Revengers live-action film series. Seishuu Handa in Barakamon is his long-awaited first starring role in a prime-time drama series.

“I thought it was a very nice piece,” Sugino said of his impression of the work. “‘Barakamon’ is a dialect word from the Goto Islands, which means ‘cheerful person.’ I think the heart-to-heart communication between the protagonist and the characters living on the islands is something we don’t get to see enough of in our daily lives, so I wanted to share the unique relationship in this drama with the viewers.”

He also has the following message for viewers: “I am excited that we will be able to create a really interesting work. I hope to convey the experience of going to an area I have never been to and the atmosphere created there through the screen. I am filled with the desire to create a wonderful drama! I believe that we can deliver a warm drama that can be watched by the whole family, which will make you feel relieved and laugh. I will do my best, so please give me your support!”

The manga was originally serialized on Square Enix’s Gangan Online web magazine from February 2009 to December 2018, then compiled in 18 tankobon volumes, with Yen Press releasing the English edition of the series. The manga’s TV anime adaptation, produced by Kinema Citrus, aired 12 episodes in Japan from July to September 2014. Crunchyroll currently streams all of the episodes and describes the series:

BARAKAMON follows the story of Seishu Handa- a calligrapher, who as a punishment from punching another famous calligrapher is outlawed to a small island. As a city boy will Seishu be able to adapt to his new environment?
