World Cosplay Summit began its history in 2003 as an annual event where cosplayers who love Japanese anime, manga, games and other pop culture gather to create a new form of international and cultural exchange. More than 200,000 people visit the event every year, and cosplayers from all over the world gather in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, to deepen exchanges. The number of participating countries and regions has increased with each event. In 2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic began), 40 countries and regions participated.

The main event, the World Cosplay Championship, is a cosplay performance competition to determine the world’s No. 1 cosplayers. Teams that win the official qualifying rounds held by organizers from countries and regions that have formed partnerships with the WCS will gather at the World Cosplay Championship, the final to be held in Nagoya. Last year’s event was held with only 12 countries due to the fact that entry to Japan was still restricted, but this year, 33 countries and regions are scheduled to visit Japan.
