The Super Mario Bros. Movie Beats The Incredibles 2 to Be 3rd Highest-Grossing Animated Film of All Time

Mario and friends in The Super Mario Bros. Movie have jumped up superstar to bronze place on the worldwide animation charts, overtaking The Incredibles 2 to be the third highest-grossing animated film of all time, sitting only behind both Frozen films. In Mario’s home country of Japan, the film rose nearly 20 spots to also be the 63rd highest-grossing film of all time in the country, passing a staggering 9 billion yen.

 

As of Sunday, May 21, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed 9.14 billion yen (US$67.88 million) in Japan on the back of 6.43 million tickets sold. It now sits behind Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 61st place on the all-time Japanese box office charts.

 

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also now the highest-grossing video game adaptation in Japan, matching its worldwide mantle, passing both Pokémon The First Movie and 2014’s Yo-Kai Watch Movie: It’s the Secret of Birth, Meow!

The Lego Movie 2 story writer Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Teen Titan’s Go! To the Movies‘ Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic co-directing. Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri at Illumination produced the film for Universal Pictures distribution.
