The Japan Folklore Association Dives into 25 More Regional Tales for 2023 Anime Project

 

Now in its sixth straight year of operation, the Japan Folklore Association’s (“Nippon Mukashibanashi Kyokai”) “Ocean Town Folklore” project, which aims to promote the relationship between Japan and the sea as well as conveying regional pride to children, will officially continue its series of animated shorts with 25 more tales to be released on the project’s official website and YouTube channel by the end of 2023.

 

Shinnosuke Numara, who directed the sequel series to Folktales from Japan, is heading up the committee for the new collection that will add to the 42 that have been produced to this point.

The regional tales being adapted this year and their origins are as follows:

 

  • “Shima no Tengu-sama” from Habaorocho, Hokkaido
  • “Kanda Kani” from Sotogahama, Aomori Prefecture
  • “Kamiwari Iwa” from Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture
  • “Kurokami to Akagami no Tatakai” from Oga, Akita Prefecture
  • “Todo no Angaeshi” from Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture
  • “Karouzan no Tenaga Akitsukami” from Shinchicho, Fukushima Prefecture
  • “Yukitogetsuka no Shirohebi” from Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture
  • “Senjuoohashi to Ookame” from Adachi City, Tokyo
  • “Kujira Mikoshi” from Imizu, Toyama Prefecture
  • “Tako Kamisama” from Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture
  • “Nishiogawa Juuichimenkannon Bosatsu” from Obama, Fukui Prefecture
  • “Maritsuki Uta” from Fujikawacho, Yamanashi Prefecture
  • “Utoutoge” from Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture
  • “Oku-hamanako no Nue-densetsu” from Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture
  • “Ama no Tomokadzuki” from Toba, Mie Prefecture
  • “Shikobuchi-san” from Takashima, Shiga Prefecture
  • “Bettou no Shio” from Awaji, Hyogo Prefecture
  • “Daisen no Amida-sama” from Ooyamachi, Tottori Prefecture
  • “Kyuuri no Kami-sama to Yamabe Jinja” from Goutsu, Shimane Prefecture
  • “Hyakkanjima Monogatari” from Fukuyama, Hiroshima
  • “Naruto no Taiko” from Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture
  • “Jizou ga Hama” from Saijou, Ehime Prefecture
  • “Umi ni Shizunda Oni” from Nakatosacho, Kochi Prefecture
  • “Kononoumi no Tennyo” from Higashisonogicho, Nagasaki Prefecture
  • “Okanegahama to Okuragahama” from Hyuuga, Miyazaki Prefecture
