The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Novelist Has Passed Away

Writer Hitoshi Yoshioka, whose novels The Most Irresponsible Man in Space led to the anime series The Irresponsible Captain Tylor and an OVA series in the 90s, has passed away. The news was shared by the Kaoru Asakura Theater Company.

The news appears to be just making its way into the West, as Yoshioka passed away in January, at age 62. A cause of death was not given. In addition to anime adaptations, his works have been adapted into stage plays and musical performances done by the Kaoru Asakura Theater Company, which is why there is a connection there.

The funeral service was limited to family members.

While Captain Tylor might be his best-known work, his novel series Suikoden Demon Century and Idol Defense Force Hummingbird also saw OVA adaptations. More recently, his Tylor story led to the 2017 anime The Irresponsible Galaxy Tylor, which Crunchyroll streamed simultaneously with the Japanese release.

Right Stuf gave this description to The Irresponsible Captain Tylor anime series:

Justy Ueki Tylor had his life all planned out: join the military, get a cushy desk job, and then retire with a big fat pension check. The perfect plan…until he wandered into a hostage situation and somehow managed to save an Admiral!

Now Tylor, a man who wouldn’t know what discipline was if it bit him in the backside, has been made Captain of the space cruiser Soyokaze! The crew of this run–down ship is the craziest, rag–tag team of misfits you’re ever likely to see, and they’re not too fond of their complacent new leader. But they had better learn to work together, because they’re about to go head to head with the mighty Raalgon Empire! For better or for worse, the Earth’s fate has been placed in the hands of a man who’s either a total idiot, or an absolute genius…
