THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Overtakes JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 to Become 10th Highest-Grossing Anime Film in Japan

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

Thanks to a stellar turnout over the Golden Week holidays, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has finally entered the top 10 highest-grossing list in Japan, overtaking JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, after rising to fifth place on the worldwide list last weekend thanks to high box office grosses from across Asia.

As of May 7, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has grossed 13.96 billion yen (US$106.09 million) in Japan on the back of over 9.66 million tickets sold since the film opened back in December. It’s currently the highest-grossing film of 2023 in Japan—the official box office calendar in Japan runs from December to November—the 10th highest-grossing anime film and overall the 16th highest-grossing film, having overtaken JUJUTSU KAISEN 0. Weathering With You sits above Slam Dunk on both lists in Japan.

Worldwide, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK continues its reign as the 5th highest-grossing anime film of all time, closing the gap between it and Suzume, which is also in theaters around the world. In China,  Slam Dunk’s second-biggest market outside Japan, the film has now grossed US$91.92 million with South Korea following at US$36.46 million. The film has grossed US$30.35 million in seven other Asian territories for a total of US$264.82 million around the world so far.

Shohoku’s “speedster” and point guard, Ryota Miyagi, always plays with brains and lightning speed, running circles around his opponents while feigning composure. Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had a brother who was three years older. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a famous local player from a young age, Ryota also became addicted to basketball.
