THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Anime Film Scores Two Points to Become 29th Highest-Grossing Film at JP Box Office

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

Another week sees THE FIRST SLAM DUNK anime film rank highly at the Japanese weekend box office, just as it has since it opened back in December. With yet another successful week, along with a win at the Japan Academy Awards, the film jumped up two places on the all-time Japan Box Office charts to become the 29th highest-grossing film of all time.

As of March 12, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has made a total of 11.92 billion yen (US$89.66 million) on the back of more than 8.19 million tickets sold. This places Slam Dunk behind The Wind Rises on both the anime all-time and the overall all-time highest-grossing charts, needing just 200 million yen to pass the Hayao Miyazaki classic.

The original Slam Dunk TV anime aired from 1993 to 1996, with four anime films being spun off from the original anime. You can catch an on-demand replay of the TV anime right here on Crunchyroll, which describes the series as such:

Hanamichi Sakuragi, an entering freshman at Shohoku High, holds a record for being rejected by 50 girls during middle school. Ever since the last girl turned him down for a guy on the basketball team, Sakuragi’s been traumatized by the sport.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK opened in Japan on December 3 in regular and IMAX theaters and expanded to Dolby Cinema screens on December 10.
