Street Fighter Film and TV Rights Land at Legendary

Street Fighter

For you, the day this post graced your eyeballs was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Monday.

Some would have you believe the 1994 live-action Street Fighter film—starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and Raul Julia as M. Bison—is a dud, but all those people are wrong. It’s a good movie and you should watch it again soon. As for what’s next for the series, The Hollywood Reporter shared news that Legendary has acquired both the film and television rights to Capcom’s fighting game series.

While there aren’t any announcements beyond that at the moment, Legendary will work on future projects alongside Street Fighter developer Capcom.

In addition to 1994’s Street Fighter film, the Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li film followed in 2009 with Kristin Kreuk in the lead. The series has inspired plenty of anime in the past, as well, including the classic Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie in 1994 and the Street Fighter II V series in 1995, among others. There’s also the 1995-1997 Street Fighter animated series, which remains hilarious to this day.

Capcom’s game series has been running since 1987’s Street Fighter, which was followed by the hugely influential Street Fighter II in 1991. The next entry, Street Fighter 6, is set to launch on June 6.
