Shakugan No Shana Franchise Gets First Light Novel in 11 Years

Japanese publisher Dengeki Bunko revealed today that the next chapter of the long-running Shakugan No Shana light novel franchise will be released in 2023 after an 11-year break. The new volume, still written by series creator Yashichiro Takahashi, is tentatively named Shakugan no Shana SIV, though it will be the fifth book in the short story collection and 27th overall for the franchise.

 

 

 

 

The Shakugan No Shana light novel franchise began in November 2002 with its first collected volume that had illustrations drawn by Noizi Ito. The latest volume, Shakugan no Shana SIII was published in November 2012. A short story appeared in the September 2017 issue of Dengeki Bunko Magazine.

Shakugan No Shana spawned a manga series as well as three anime series, one anime film and two OVA series’ from director Takashi Watanabe at J.C.Staff. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the anime, describing the series as such:

 

Murdered by a demonic being, 15-year-old Yuji has his life force replaced by a flame that dims with each day. When the flame dies, no one will remember he was ever alive. This is how he meets Shana: a warrior with a burning sword, and the will of a god as her guide. The two form a bond as Yuji becomes Shana’s accomplice in her battles to keep the balance between the ordinary world and hers.
