November 6, 2022: the in-universe date of the Sword Art Online incident. Fans and creators alike commemorated the occasion in their own unique way—such as the official Full Dive event that revealed a new original movie—but one dedicated devotee went a whole step further than the rest…

Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR and designer of the first Oculus Rift, poured his longstanding love of Sword Art Online into creating a new kind of virtual-reality headset: one that actually terminates the player if they die in-game (pictured below).

According to Luckey’s blog post, where he professes his personal journey with the franchise, he states that the three attached explosive charge modules are rigged to go off when the screen flashes red at a specific frequency, which can be integrated by any developer to indicate a player’s game-over—in-game and in real life.

The extent to which this is functional is unclear, and “perfect” virtual reality is still a long way out, but there’s no denying Luckey’s vision and continued dedication to furthering the technology.
