New Japanese Godzilla Project in the Works with Takashi Yamazaki Directing

While the Legendary Monsterverse continues to look ahead to 2024’s Godzilla vs. Kong rematch, it’s Japan’s turn once again to take a crack at the Big G. TOHO announced that a new entry in the Godzilla series is in the works, and directing, writing and visual effects duties fall to Takashi Yamazaki for this one. A date is currently down for November 3, 2023.

Yamazaki’s filmography includes a mix of live-action and CG-animated film, from 2002’s Returner and the 2014-2015 Parasyte films to animated projects like Stand by Me Doraemon and Lupin III: The First. TOHO didn’t announce the format of the new Godzilla—including whether it would be live-action or animated—so we’ll have to stay tuned for further details.

The announcement came through today, November 3, which just so happens to be Godzilla Day and marks the November 3, 1954 wide Japanese release of Ishiro Honda’s groundbreaking first Godzilla film.

Beyond this and the untitled Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, Legendary Entertainment has an Apple TV+ series in development.
