Kaiji No. 8

Kaiju No. 8 is still lumbering its way toward the 2024 anime season, but we’ve got a look at its human hero’s official design!

The upcoming series’s official Twitter account dropped this pic showing 32-year-old Kafka Hibino as he’ll appear in the anime. Kafka once dreamed of being a soldier and mopping up the giant monsters he despises… but has found himself doing this literally, as part of a cleaning crew tidying up after kaiju battles.

The original Kaiju No. 8 manga is serialized in Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ digital manga magazine, and an English language version is also available from Viz Media, who describe the story of the first volume as follows:

Kafka hopes to one day keep his pact with his childhood friend Mina to join the Japan Defense Force and fight by her side. But while she’s out neutralizing kaiju as Third Division captain, Kafka is stuck cleaning up the aftermath of her battles. When a sudden rule change makes Kafka eligible for the Defense Force, he decides to try out for the squad once more. There’s just one problem—he’s made the Defense Force’s neutralization list under the code name Kaiju No. 8.
