Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Black Iron Submarine Stays on 2nd Place

In its fourth weekend, the Detective Conan anime franchise’s 26th feature film, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine earned a still-impressive 1.19 billion yen (8.8 million USD) on 851,000 admissions, almost equalling the previous weekend’s numbers. After dominating the box office for two weeks, the film has stayed in second place for two consecutive weekends behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Meanwhile, as reported yesterday, the film’s cumulative box office gross in Japan has finally surpassed the 10 billion yen mark for the first time in the anime franchise’s 27-year history. According to the film’s official Twitter, it has earned 10,304,483,700 yen (76.2 million USD) on 7,280,136 admissions in 24 days since its release on April 14. The previous top-grossing film in the franchise was the 25th film, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween, released in 2022 and earned 9.78 billion yen (72.37 million USD).

With 334 million yen (2.47 million USD) on 246,000 admissions, Tokyo Revengers 2 Chi no Valentine-hen -Unmei- (“Bloody Halloween Arc -Fate-“) ranked in fourth place in its third weekend, same as the previous weekend. Its cumulative total gross has reached 1.868 billion yen (13.82 million USD) on 1.4 million admissions, about 85 percent of the three-week gross of the first live-action film released in July 2021.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK still attracted Japanese audiences even in its 23rd week, ranking sixth. Meanwhile, Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia, the 42nd anime feature film in the nationally popular Doraemon franchise, ranked eighth in its tenth weekend, bringing its total to 42.6 billion yen (31.54 million USD).

The Hideaki Anno-directed Shin Kamen Rider fell outside the top 10 in its eighth weekend. Its estimated total gross is 2.224 billion yen (16.58 million USD), which is about 27 percent of Shin Godzilla (2016) and 50 percent of Shin Ultraman (2022). Also, Saint Seiya: The Beginning, the live-action film adaptation of Masami Kurumada’s classic Saint Seiya action fantasy manga, quickly disappeared from the top 10 in its second weekend.
