Japan Box Office: Detective Conan 26th Film Stays at No.1 for Two Consecutive Weekends

The Detective Conan anime franchise’s 26th feature film, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, earned a still-impressive 1.615 billion yen (12 million USD) on 1.113 million admissions in its second weekend, holding the No.1 spot for two weekends in a row.

The 109-minute film already collected 5,866,654,490 yen (43.18 million USD) on 4,072,179 admissions in ten days since its release in Japan on April 14, making it the seventh top-grossing film in the series’ theatrical version, surpassing the 19th film Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Infernos (2015 / 4.48 billion yen).

Tokyo Revengers 2 Chi no Valentine-hen -Unmei- (“Bloody Halloween Arc -Fate-“), the first of the two-part sequel of the live-action film adaptation project inspired by Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers manga, was released in 361 theaters across Japan on April 21, then earning a little disappointing 583 million yen (4.35 million USD) on 428,000 admissions in its first weekend, making its second place debut. The first three-day weekend gross was about 84.5% of that of the first film released in July 2021.

The critical reception of the film was not outstanding, ranking only third on Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.8/5.0 based on 1,056 reviews. The second part Tokyo Revengers 2 Chi no Valentine-hen -Kessen- (“Bloody Halloween Arc -Decisive Battle-“) will follow on June 30.

Perhaps in response to its great success overseas, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK climbed up to third again from last weekend’s fifth in its 21st weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 13.2 billion yen (98.2 million USD) on 9.22 million admissions.

Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia, the 42nd anime feature film in the nationally popular Doraemon franchise, went down two positions to fourth in its eighth weekend, bringing its total to 4.083 billion yen (30.4 million USD) on 3.44 million admissions.

In its sixth weekend, Shin Kamen Rider ranked sixth, two positions down from last weekend. The Hideaki Anno-directed film’s cumulative total domestic gross has finally surpassed the two billion yen (14.89 million USD) mark on 1.36 million admissions, making it the most successful film in the 52-year-old Kamen Rider franchise.
