Galaxy Express 999 Collabs with Seiko for 45th Anniversary Watch

45 years ago, Maetel first took Tetsuro—and us—on a journey to the stars. To celebrate this big anniversary, watch maker Seiko has created a limited-edition Galaxy Express 999 timepiece.

Based on Leiji Matsumoto‘s manga of the same name, the anime debuted in 1978 and ran for 113 episodes. This was followed by multiple movies, an OVA, the anime series Space Symphony Maetel, and the currently-running manga Galaxy Express 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey. The many retellings follow the mysterious Maetel throughout her life—first as she takes the impoverished Tetsuro on a journey to get an undying mechanical body, then into her own complicated past.

The commemorative watch takes its inspiration from the astral locomotive itself, with the “999” number plate displayed on the face and inset dials reflecting gauges in the engine room:

The back of the silver watch is engraved with an image of Maetel, as well as your watch’s number out of 999—the line’s limited run. It arrives in a collector’s box with Maetel’s portrait on the inside lid.
