Upcoming Exhibition Chronicles Nearly 50 Years of BL Manga

 

Next month in Saitama, a new exhibition will open tracing the nearly 50-year history of BL manga! This first-of-its-kind event, appropriately titled The First BL Exhibition, will take place at the Kadokawa Musashino Museum and be divided up into three distinct sections.

 

The first will explore the earliest history of BL (“boys’ love” ) manga, starting with the 1978 launch of the magazine JUNE.

The second section will focus on the yaoi boom of the 1980s, with special focus on doujinshi. And the third will explore BL culture from the 1990s to today, including the spread of sub-genres and its presence in media mix projects.

 

Art from Keiko Takemiya‘s Kaze to Ki no Uta will serve as key art for the exhibition, as well as being on display in the exhibition itself:

A satellite venue on the same floor as the main exhibition, Book Street, will let visitors pick up and read copies of many of the books on display:

 

 

The First BL Exhibition will take place from May 20 to July 16 at Saitama’s Kadokawa Musashino Museum.
