These Upcoming Winter Anime Are Flipping the Script

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a and more winter anime retelling familiar stories

The winter anime season is almost upon us, and we can’t wait! We’ll be kicking off a new year of anime with new titles, new adaptations, and new isekai… but that’s for another day. Today, we’re looking at three new-but-familiar series.

New, because they’re fresh out of the kitchen for the season. Familiar, because they’re revisiting stories from the worlds of games, mixed media, and… other anime. Here are just a few of the shows we’re eyeing for the new season.

Technoroid: Overmind

Technoroid: Overmind

Originally intended to debut earlier this year, Technoroid: Overmind will be taking the stage as part of the winter anime season. The anime is part of the Technoroid media mix franchise, created by Symphogear co-creator Noriyasu Agematsu. It takes place on a flooded future Earth, where robots and android handle most of the hard work. That includes lifting the spirits of the resident humans with music.

So far, fans have explored the world of Technoroid through games and online radio shows. Now, we’ll dive fully into the story of these talented android idol boys!

Trigun Stampede

Love, peace, and donuts are back on the menu! Vash the Stampede joins the winter anime season in a new Trigun anime. This will differ significantly from the original 1998 series in many ways. But there’s one in particular that interests us: it comes after the end of the manga. In other words, Trigun Stampede can address a lot of plot points that hadn’t happened when the first anime aired.

Hailing from Beastars and Land of the Lustrous studio Orange, the new series seems to assume we know the big secret of Vash’s background. At least, that’s the impression we get from the trailers. How will that change the show? We’ll just have to wait and see.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a

So, you thought you’d squeezed every last bit of lore out of NieR:Automata? The winter anime season begs to differ. NieR:Automata Ver1.1a will take us back to the world of Yoko Taro’s multifaceted video game. And the masked madlad has confirmed that there will be changes. Though, for a change, he probably won’t be going fully off the rails.

Taro has said the anime will run a bit differently as things that work in game storytelling don’t work as well in anime storytelling. But, out of respect for the fans, they won’t be completely overhauling the story you know and love. So how will the new anime roll? Only time will tell.
