The Tatami Time Machine Blues Selected as Filmarks’ Best Japanese Film of 2022
Filmarks, one of the largest film, drama, and anime review services in Japan operated by Tsumiki Corporation, has announced the “2022 Movie Ranking,” which were calculated based on its user ratings for Japanese/foreign films released in Japanese theaters in 2022 (between December 1, 2021 and November 30, 2022). The scores were based on each user’s rating on a 5.0-point scale after viewing.

Its highest-rated Japanese film was Science SARU’s anime feature The Tatami Time Machine Blues with an average rating of 4.21/5.0 based on 7,679 reviews. The only other anime film in the top 10 is JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 in fourth with 4.11/5.0 on 62,365 reviews. Meanwhile, the highest-rated foreign film was Top Gun Maverick with 4.50/5.0 on 108,573 reviews.
The anime was inspired by Tomihiko Morimi’s sci-fi novel of the same name, which was published by KADOKAWA in July 2020 as a collaboration work between Morimi’s The Tatami Galaxy novel and Makoto Ueda’s Summertime Machine Blues stage play. Shingo Natsume, who has directed Space Dandy (2014), One-Punch Man (2015), ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. (2017), Boogiepop and Others (2019), Sonny Boy (2021), served as director on a screenplay written by Ueda himself.
The 6-episode series first premiered exclusively on Disney+ in Japan on September 14, 2022, then its compilation film followed on September 30 for a limited-time theatrical run of three weeks. The film version also won Hochi Film Award‘s Best Animated Picture.
