The Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer Is Finally Here

The very first trailer for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been released! It was revealed during a Nintendo Direct livestream that’s synced up with New York Comic Con. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of  Super Mario Bros. and co-producer of the film, gave an opening statement before the trailer was released. Miyamoto has been described as being “front and center in the creation of this film.”

At the 34:40 point of the livestream, Miyamoto talks in Japanese with English dubbed over him, and then turns the video to “Chris-san,” a.k.a. Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, the studio making the movie with Nintendo. Illumination Entertainment is behind such movies as Despicable Me and Minions. Meledandri is also a co-producer, and after he talks, it’s turned over to another “Chris-san” — Chris Pratt, the voice of Mario.

Pratt talks about how he started playing Mario as a kid at the laundromat. Next Jack Black, who’s been cast as Bowser, gets his time to speak. Then, at 39:19 in the livestream, the trailer begins. In addition to hearing Pratt’s and Black’s voices, you can hear Keegan-Michael Key play Toad.

Looking toward the other actors, Charlie Day plays Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach, Seth Rogen plays Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen plays Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson plays Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco plays Spike. If you think of Charles Martinet when you think of Mario’s voice, he will be in the movie to do cameos. You’ll have to listen closely for him!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, working on a script written by Matthew Fogel. It’s scheduled to hit the big screen in America on April 7, followed by Japan on April 28. Universal Pictures is in charge of distribution.
