The Super Mario Bros. Movie Becomes the Fastest Hollywood-Animated Film to Reach 10 Billion Yen in Japan Ever

Mario’s superstar run in Japan continued over the last week with The Super Mario Bros. Movie passing 10 billion yen over the weekend doing so in only 31 days, making it the fastest Hollywood-animated film to do so and the second-fasted Hollywood film ever after the first Harry Potter film.

 

As of May 28, The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s 31st day in Japanese theaters, the film has made 10,057,858,799 yen (US$74.36 million) on the back of 7.05 million tickets sold. This makes it the 42nd highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, just below Toy Story 4. Mario made 10 billion yen in 31 days, the same amount of time as Ponyo and faster than Frozen, Suzume and Howl’s Moving Castle.

Worldwide, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has made US$1.27 billion, making it the 20th highest-grossing film ever worldwide and the 3rd highest-grossing animated film ever, an amazing feat for the first Nintendo joint production.

The Lego Movie 2 story writer Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Teen Titan’s Go! To the Movies‘ Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic co-directing. Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri at Illumination produced the film for Universal Pictures distribution.
