THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

The results of the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize awards ceremony are in, and Takehiko Inoue’s THE FIRST SLAM DUNK anime film continued its run of accolades by taking home the Animation of the Year award. It won over some big nominees, including One Piece Film Red, Suzume, INU-OH and Lonely Castle in the Mirror. This was just one of a handful of major anime film wins, so let’s take a look at some of the highlights.

While Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume anime film may not have won Animation of the Year, it did win the Best Music award for the combined efforts of RADWIMPS and composer Kazuma Jinnouchi.

One Piece Film Red nabbed a couple of awards, including the Popularity Award in the film category and the Special Award, which is given to individuals or groups who achieved outstanding results in the past year. Considering how much success One Piece Film Red saw during its lengthy run in cinemas, this is certainly a well-earned honor.

Shin Ultraman and Anime Supremacy! were among the nominees for Best Picture this year, but Aru Otoko ended up winning. The others didn’t leave empty-handed, though. Shin Ultraman won Best Cinematography for the work of Osamu Ichikawa and Keizo Suzuki, as well as Best Lighting for Sosuke Yoshikado and Best Art Direction for Yuji Hayashida and Eri Sakushima.
