THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Anime Film Jumps Up to 51st Place on All Time Japanese Box Office Charts

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK was finally dethroned from first place on the weekend rankings for the first time since its initial release in Japanese theaters on December 3, 2022, but that hasn’t stopped the Toei Animation-produced flick from continuing to rise through the all-time highest-grossing ranks in Japan.

As of January 29, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK made 9.454 billion yen (US$70.87 million) on the back of 6.475 million tickets sold. This made the movie jump up to 51st place on the all-time Japanese box office charts, just behind 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park. On the all-time anime chart in Japan, it’s now 14th and in between Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween and Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire.

The original Slam Dunk TV anime aired from 1993 to 1996, with four anime films being spun off from the original anime. You can catch an on-demand replay of the TV anime right here on Crunchyroll, which describes the series as such:

Hanamichi Sakuragi, an entering freshman at Shohoku High, holds a record for being rejected by 50 girls during middle school. Ever since the last girl turned him down for a guy on the basketball team, Sakuragi’s been traumatized by the sport.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK opened in Japan on December 3 in regular and IMAX theaters and expanded to Dolby Cinema screens on December 10.
