Even if Sunrise the anime studio may be a thing of the past after having the business name changed to Bandai Namco Filmworks, the legacy of the anime studio lives on. This is most apparent in the love many have for the name Sunrise, which continues to live on at Sunrise Festival, which is returning in 2023 after skipping 2022.
While the program for the 2023 event hasn’t been confirmed at this time, the Tokyo leg is set to be held at both Grand Cinema Sunshine in Ikebukuro and Shinjuku Piccadilly from January 9 to 29, 2023. The 2021 event was held over six cities across Japan, showing works such as Gintama, Aikatsu, Code Geass, Gundam and other popular series from the studio along with talk shows and more.
Sunrise became Bandai Namco Filmworks earlier in the year amid a restructuring at Bandai Namco. Bandai Namco Filmworks decided to keep the Sunrise name around due to being a “key brand” that has been around for 40 years, being used at Sunrise Festival because it’s familiar with the fanbase.
