Solanin Author Inio Asano’s Downfall Manga Gets Live-action Film in March 2023
A live-action film adaptation of Inio Asano‘s (Solanin, Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction) Reiraku / Downfall manga is set to be released in Japan on March 17, 2023. It is directed by Naoto Takenaka, who is active as an actor and singer as well as a film director.
The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s seinen manga magazine Big Comic Superior from March to July 2017, then collected in a single tankobon volume. Under the title Downfall, its English edition was released by VIZ Media in February 2020. The publisher describes its synopsis as below:
Selling copies is the only thing that matters. So what if your first series just ended and you have no idea how to start the next one, your marriage is breaking up, your pure love of manga has been destroyed by the cruel reality of the industry and nothing seems to fill the sucking void inside you… Find the secret combo for a new hit manga series and everything will be okay. Right?
Takumi Saito (Shin Ultraman) stars as the manga artist protagonist, Kaoru Fukazawa, alongside Shuri as Chifuyu, a delivery health girl, and MEGUMI as Nozomi Machida, Fukazawa’s wife who works as manga editor. MEGUMI also serves as the film’s producer.

One day, I stopped by a bookstore and met a girl. She was staring at me. I gently took the girl in my hand. When I turned away from the girl, the word “Reiraku” appeared. The word “Re-I-Ra-Ku” came out of my mouth. And…the original story was written by Inio Asano! My brain trembled at the sight of those words! I slowly turn the pages one by one… I don’t know how much time passed, but when I closed the last page, I thought to myself, “…I want to make a movie…! I want to make a movie of ‘Reiraku’ for sure! My heart was screaming. I want to make a movie of “Reiraku” that Inio Asano drew! With that thought in mind, I set off at a run! Whoo!!!
