Shizukanaru Don – Yakuza Side Story Returns as Live-action Feature Film in Spring 2023

Tatsuo Nitta’s yakuza-themed manga Shizukanaru Don – Yakuza Side Story gets a two-part (four episodes in total) live-action film adaptation in the spring of 2023. The two episodes will be released two weeks in a row each.

This is the second film to be produced under the “Reiwa Outlaw Label,” which revives outlaw classics from the Showa and Heisei eras, following Naniwa Kinyudo (based on Yuji Aoki’s manga of the same name) released in November 2022.

The manga was serialized in Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha’s Weekly Manga Sunday for 1,175 chapters from 1988 to 2012, then compiled in 108 tankobon volumes. Its story centers on Shizuya Kondo, who works as a designer for the underwear company Pretty during the day. But in fact he is the only son of the head of a wide-area yakuza organization, Shinsengumi, which has 10,000 yakuza members. He is living an ordinary life as an ordinary businessman, but he is forced to succeed to the position of the third boss of his clan.

The manga has been adapted into live-action original video series and films several times since the early 1990s. The protagonist Shizuya Kondo was previously portrayed by Teruyuki Kagawa (1991- 1996, 2000-2001), Kotaro Takeshita (1997-1998), and Yoshihiko Hakamada (2011). In the 2023 version, the protagonist is played by Kentaro Ito (Shinji Ito in the Kyo Kara Ore Wa!! live-action series).
