Sega Boasts Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles Sales

The anime and manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba have been wildly successful, so it stands to reason that any video games based off it would do well, too. Sega just revealed that its video game Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles (a.k.a. Kimetsu no Yaiba: Hinokami Keppūtan in Japanese) has more than three million copies around the globe. To be more specific, Sega says this refers to “all physical version copies shipped, including limited-edition packages, and all digital version copies sold.” This may not be the record-breaking numbers that, say, the Demon Slayer movie received, but it’s still pretty impressive.

The game originally came out in fall 2021, being released in Japan first and shortly after having an American debut. It is available to play on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, plus Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. It has received several free updates.

Sega Asia gave this description of the game:

“Become the Demon Slayer, Tanjiro Kamado, to fight off the demons threatening humanity in order to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human, as well as to avenge the death of his family by hunting down the demon who killed them.”

For the battle part of the game, people are able to play as Tanjiro Kamado (no surprise), his sister Nezuko Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Inosuke Hashibira, Kyōjurō Rengoku, Giyu Tomioka, Sakonji Urokodaki, Shinobu Kochō, Sabito, Makomo, Tanjiro Kamado (using Hinokami Kagura), and Murata.

VIZ Media publishes the original manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge and gave this description for the first volume:

“Learning to destroy demons won’t be easy, and Tanjiro barely knows where to start. The surprise appearance of another boy named Giyu, who seems to know what’s going on, might provide some answers—but only if Tanjiro can stop Giyu from killing his sister first!”
