One Piece Film Red Topples Howl’s Moving Castle to Sail to 6th Highest-Grossing Anime Movie in Japan

 

Despite regaining a monstrous amount of steam again in the film’s last two weeks, One Piece Film Red has left theaters in Japan and has an official end total for its historic theatrical box office run, confirming predictions that it overtook Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle to be the sixth highest-grossing anime film in Japan of all time.

 

As of January 29, One Piece Film Red’s 177th day in Japanese theaters, the Toei Animation-produced film made 19.70 billion yen (US$141.07 million) on the back of 14.27 million tickets sold. Not only did Film Red overtake Howl’s Moving Castle’s anime spot, but also its spot on the all-time chart, where Film Red is now also the eighth highest-grossing film in Japan of all time.

While Film Red may still be showing in small theaters in Japan, now that it’s out of general release, tracking will slow with official numbers not being released on a weekly or likely monthly basis.

 

 

One Piece Film Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll released the film in English-speaking countries last November, starting with Australia and New Zealand on November 3 then followed by the United States and Canada on November 4. Crunchyroll describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:

 

Uta—the most beloved singer in the world whose voice has been described as “otherworldly”—is renowned for concealing her own identity when performing. Now, for the first time ever, she will reveal herself to the world at a live concert.

 

With the Navy watching closely, the venue fills with Uta’s fans—including excited pirates and the Straw Hats led by Luffy, who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—all eagerly awaiting the voice that the whole world has been waiting for to resound. The story begins with the shocking revelation that she is the enigmatic Shanks’ daughter.

 

The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll and new episodes coming out each week as they air in Japan.
