One Piece Film Red

One Piece has finally done it, 79 days after the Toei Animation-produced film opened in theaters in its home country, One Piece Film Red has finally made it into the top ten highest-grossing films of all time in Japan, debuting on the list at ninth place. The latest box office numbers for the anime film were also released as well as its weekend ranking.

As of October 23, One Piece Film Red’s 79th day in Japanese theaters, the movie has grossed a total of 17.356 billion yen (US$124.44 million) on the back of 12.5 million tickets sold. It has overtaken both Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Bayside Shakedown 2 to be the ninth highest-grossing film in Japanese history pushing Harry Potter out of the top 10. Though Film Red continues to be the sixth highest-grossing anime film behind Howl’s Moving Castle and isn’t likely to overtake the Miyazaki-directed film’s 19.60 billion yen taking.

Despite hitting the milestone this weekend, One Piece Film Red dropped two places on the attendance rankings to third, losing its first-place ranking for the first time in the film’s run. Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night debuted in 1st place as expected with the Japanese live-action film Karada Sagashi coming in second. Karada ironically also has a theme sung by Ado.
